For me, one of the most nerve-wracking parts of studying abroad was simply getting to my host country. For seasoned travelers, I'm sure this is no big deal! However, I kept imagining all the things that could go wrong before, during, and after the flight. What I found out is that there is no real reason to worry.

Your first step will be getting a plane ticket. With any luck, you'll be able to find an inexpensive one. Buy a round trip ticket, because even if you aren't sure when you want to leave your host country, it's better to have a flight booked. I bought my ticket through Student Universe, but it still cost me about $1200 from New York to Kansai. Keep checking at different times to see if you can get a lower-priced flight. I've also heard that booking a flight through a Japanese travel company rather than a U.S. one can save you some money.

I do recommend you show up early for all your flights, because security measures are still tough and getting cleared can take a while. Check all the TSA guidelines before your flight and follow them so you have less to worry about.

Finally, remember to pack light! Most of the things you think you need, you don't. Plus, you will definitely need the extra space in your suitcase to fit your new treasures in on your return home. Just keep in mind that most things can be bought when you've arrived.
